A Grant of Probate gives power to the executors to begin administering the estate. A "Caveat" prevents anyone from obtaining a Grant of Probate, and hence administrating the estate. A caveat can be used when you are considering contesting a will   For example a caveat would be required if you were concerned about the validity of the will and need some time to investigate whether it is genuine, a Caveat can be applied for in order to prevent Probate from being issued and lasts for 6 months from the date of issue.
